mothers of uther and merlin

There seems to be a problem of whose mother died about a third way into
Uther. Whose mother died -- Merlin's or Uther's

Hi Ron!

It had to be Uther's mother as Merlin's mother died when he was only 2 months old (see the last chapter in The Singing Sword). Genealogy can be a little confusing in the series and there are a few errors, but in this case it had to be Uther.

It is implied that Uther's mother, Veronica is still alive when Uther gets involved with Ygraine, and she is certainly alive when Cassandra/Diedre is killed, so they most be talking about some other family member-all the family connections are rather confusing.

Thank you for your response. I am going back to read the whole series.
I had read the third and the fifth in the series and only part of Uther.
I still believe this series rivals Stewarts' as the best interpretation.

Thank you for your response. I am going back to reread the whole
series as I only read the third and the fifth. I still feel this series
rivals Stewart's version. Have you read the new anthology by Ashley.
It's just out this month in trade paperback. It helps put the whole
legend in context.

Neither, I am pretty sure it was a typo. I am almost finished with my second reading of Uther and picked up on the reference to Uther's mother death, however she is mentioned later on in the present tense. But to answer your question, it was Uther's mother, Veronica that was referred to in that passage.

Thank you for responding to my query. You gave me the exact answer
I was looking for. I really liked reading Uther and plan to reread it.

Re:mothers of uther and merlin

I actually brought this up a couple of years ago in the old forum and Jack Whyte himself was kind enough to answer my inquiry regarding the statement in UTHER about Uther's mother being dead in reference to Lot's insults directed at Uther, when in fact she was very much alive only a couple pages earlier!

It seems that with the U.S. Tor publication of Uther, unfortunately somehow the editor got hold of a previous written version of that scene and incorrectly placed it in UTHER. Jack Whyte was seriously considering having Veronica die early in UTHER but then realized that she was living long after that scene in EAGLES BROOD, so she could not very well die early in UTHER, but never noticed the mistake until it was brought up in the forum, by none other than myself.

If you are familiar with the U.S. Tor version of UTHER, there are many, many mistakes regarding editing and it made for bad reading at times because it took away from the overall beauty of the work, which would have been magnificent with better double-checking (and less Jonet the Toad), at least with the U.S. version.

I was so disappointed in UTHER, as a matter of fact, that I ordered the Canadian CLOTHAR in late 2003, rather than put myself through another terrible editing experience with waiting for the U.S. version. And I also now have THE EAGLE, the Canadian Viking Penguin copy. Very well written and nicely edited, as CLOTHAR was and as I imagine the Canadian UTHER version was?

I was not a huge fan of Jack Whyte being talked into doing a stand-alone third-person tale of Uther in order to answer those so many unanswered questions in BROOD. I enjoyed the mysterious aspect of Deidre's death and Uther's death before Merlin could catch him and kill him before Ravenglass did. And the character of Jonet the Toad was obviously made up just for UTHER. Blah!

Re:mothers of uther and merlin

I am answering the 11/14/2005 message on Uther's mother. Thank you
so much for clearing that up for me. I am just now going back to reread
the whole series to see if this was wrong in Uther. Now I can go back
with a clear head and reread Uther and read the Lancethrower. Thank
you Meghan.

I tried to edit my 5/11/2006 letter to Aidan but got a hacking notice.
It was the 11/14/2005 letter from Aidan that I was responding to
and I am sorry I called you Meghan.
