Nice to see Chief Scott is still around and new posts from Jack - I think the last time I saw posts from him was way back when Clothar was coming out! The redesigned site is nice. I was surprised to discover my login still worked. Too bad I don't see any of the other real old members - Jen, Matt, YUT, Erik, Tony, etc. I got an e-mail from Matt a couple of years ago, but don't know when I last heard from the rest. Are the old forums gone? I remember the last site still had the previous iteration up, with messages going back, well, probably ten years or more by now.
I see from the blog that there is a new book coming out, this one about William Wallace. I will be sure to give it a read once it makes it to my library. Is it based on Blind Harry?
I never ended up reading the Templar Trilogy - to busy with other books and - no offense to Jack Whyte if he reads this - but I really did not enjoy Clothar and The Eagle. I still have my signed copy of The Eagles Brood sitting on my book self though, right beside the rest of his Arthurian books (including the two I didn't enjoy, so he still got my money for them ;p)!
Anyway, I'll drop by here again soon to see if there is anyone left who still remembers me and wants to have a chat. If there isn't, well, it's nice to see that Jack is still writing.
Hi William, Glad to see
Hi William,
Glad to see you're still alive and kicking.
The only olde-tymer I've seen here since the redesign went online, other than Chief Scott, is Thom. I'm afraid the board here has been all but completely dead for a considerable length of time.
I have seen posts by Matt on another website that deals with Roman era themes, but he pretty much said his goodbyes before the original forum was replaced. He has shown up every once in a blue moon, but not very often on this new message board, or the version of it that was on the previous website.
I guess everyone else has developed new interests, and moved on. :o( Wish they'd at least pop by for a visit now and then, and let those of us from way back know they're still alive and well though.
As for the old forums that were available in a read-only format on the previous website to this, as far as I know, Mark hasn't yet figured out a way to make them compatable with the new server system this one is on.
Hope you make it back here again.
Cathy
Speaking of "been a while"...
Hey William! Your post was a regular blast from the past.
I thought that perhaps I should explain my recent absence from the board here since I usually seem to be among the more prolific posters. Some of you might remember SGN of the Old Forum encouraging me to attend the first North American Historical Novel Society Conference. I hemmed and hawed but when it was announced that Jack would be the Author Guest of Honor I took the plunge. The conference exposed me to the real world of writing and publishing as opposed to my somewhat insular view. I also met my critique partner of the last six years there. We have been trading chapters and stories via email and she has signed with an agent and I expect great things for her.
Last year at the 3rd HNS Conference in Chicago, I was approached by Ann Chamberlin, organizer of the first conference. She was wondering if it would be possible to bring the next conference to San Diego, and I agreed to undertake a feasibility study. One thing led to another and I found myself on the HNS Conference Board of Directors as the Hotel Liaison, and we have recently announced that the 4th conference will indeed take place in San Diego in June of 2011.
Just when I thought that most of the heavy lifting for my position was complete, our Program Chair resigned due to constraints made on her available time, and I suddenly found myself "elevated" to the position. I still think that the other Board members might be pointing and snickering when I'm not looking, but having agreed to take over the position I now feel that it is incumbent upon me to do the best job of it that I can. So, that is why I haven't been around much, as a great deal of my free time is spent on trying to stay ahead of the game in the preparation for our next event.
I will be taking a break in October to attend the Surrey Conference to see how they do business and to maybe rub elbows and hoist a glass with our favorite author. In case he is very busy, I've scheduled a slot with him for the Blue Pencil cafe and I'll put him on the spot to have a look at a much revised "Kaeso".
About that HNC in Seattle...
Chief, I had no idea you were that actively involved in the Conference. Good for you! That'll keep you out of mischief and take your mind off boredom for a while... If you have any open spaces in your Seattle schedule for next June, I'd be happy to contribute in any way you might think suitable. Drop me a line.
Jack
Not Seattle, Jack, San Diego.
Not Seattle, Jack, San Diego. You know, where the Torrey Pines Golf Course is...
Seattle . . . San Diego...
So much the better. San Diego's the home of my Webmaster, Mark, and he's been trying to get me down there for years...
Jack
Seattle...San Diego...
I'll definitely be at Surrey. We can talk about it then!
San Diego
Chief! That's great news that you'll be here in 2011. Let me know if I can help at all. Last year I sold sandiego.com which was well connected with the hotels; I gave the local tourism bureau their domain name, sandiego.org and I have a business partner here that owns two hotels. Likely you've tied that all up by now, but I'm also VP of Strategic Development on the board of a group called Mainly Mozart (mainlymozart.org) and our annual Mozart festival is in June. We bring in the best musicians from around the planet for a stack of concerts in the Balboa theater downtown. I would be happy to work out something to get you tickets.

Mozart!
Mark, our conference will be at the Holiday Inn on the Bay, just across the street from the Star of India. It will take place June 17-19. I think it would be great if we could have some sort of tie-in. Stephanie Cowell wrote a book called "Marrying Mozart" and we have several other authors that have written about famous composers. Laurel Corona, for example, is a San Diegan that wrote "The Four Seasons", which featured Antonio Vivaldi. It might make for a nice twist to both of our programs if we could find the right sort of happy medium.
a very long time
Hi All,
Its probably been 7 years since Ive been on here, and it nice to see some familiar names. I still read the the old series from time to time and its like getting reunited with an old friend. After reading the Chronicles the first time, i was lucky enough to spend time in England exploring the sites from the books. I also got to meet two old forum memebers ( Matt and SGN ) at a Roman re-enactment at Hadrian's Wall. It was a great time. Thank you Jack for inspiring me to go and see places like Cornwall, Ravenglass, the Pass by Mediobogdum, and of course Hadrian's wall. I recently heard rumors that you might be returning to the Arthurian series, but now I see instead that you have a new series based upon the history of your homeland. I cant wait to immerse myself in another of your creations. Thanks again Jack!
Hope to see some more familiar names on here as I'll be popping in more often now.

Welcome Back...
Hi, JDV:
What a pleasure to see a return visit from one of our revered alumni, and to discover that you actually went in search of the Grail by visiting Hardknott Pass and Mediobogdum. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I suspect you would have.
Jack
Hi Jack, It was an amazing
Hi Jack,
It was an amazing trip and mediobogdum was definitely a highlight. It was so great that my friends and I returned the following year, although with a few variations. Thanks for the inspiration. We never made it too far beyond Hadrian's Wall, so there is still plenty to look forward to.
I've wanted to make it up to Surrey for the writer's conference the past few years, but something always seems to get in the way. This year I took the week off from my job and I though it was going to finally happen. Nope. Going to need ACL reconstruction, and its been schedueled for Oct 7th. Looks like I'm going to have to continue to wait just a little bit longer. Hope you will still be attending Jack, when I eventually make it there. Would love to meet you in person and maybe raise a pint with you.
Thanks again for all of your creations and I cant wait for the new series.
Jason
The Old Forum
I still have the old forum. It's in a SQL database that I built the original interface to access. I just haven't put the time into slipping into this format. I've got new database servers running in the cloud now, though, and I might be able to bring it back to life. I sort of assumed that interest in reading back that far wouldn't be too high. I've not seen other forums with that kind of history. What does everyone think?

Considering how many times
Considering how many times people have enquired about the Old Forum since it disappeared from the site, I think it's safe to say that there would be quite a bit of interest in seeing it here again.
Especially considering the fact that the best discussion ever held on a message board here was on the Old Forum.
The Old Forum
The only problem that I personally would have with the Old Forum being accessible is the astounding amount of time I would spend there instead of editing/critiquing/writing. ;)
